BREAKING NEWS--Astros to Acquire Garland?

Wow! Nothing's been announced yet, but this is freaking huge. I'm speechless. Garland would be a big-time acquisition, though one has to wonder if his 4.51 ERA will skyrocket at Minute Maid while simultaneously wondering if he'll benefit from getting to face NL line-ups that are devoid of DHs. Assuming what's being reported is accurate, you hate to give up Willy T., but I'm fine with sending Taylor Buchholz to Chicago. All things considered, I'd have to think this is a great deal for the Astros.

The biggest issue, of course, is whether this affects the 'Stros efforts to sign Andy Pettitte. As an Astros fan, you'd have to hope not. But Uncle Drayton might not be too geeked about committing to another $12,000,000.00 to $14,000,000.00 for Lefty. Interesting to see how this story develops...

According to Newsday, the White Sox aren't as confident that this deal's going to get done as T-Poo must be. Newsday says that the White Sox say no deal has been made, and they are currently leaving the winter meetings. I've also read that the argument is Hirsh (Chicago wants) versus Buchholz (Houston offers).

I'm not so sure what I think about this move. Garland's had exactly one year in his last five with an ERA under 4.50. He gives up about 12 baserunners per nine innings and strikes out under five guys per nine innings. He certainly adds depth as a solid #4 guy, but to me, he certainly would not replace Pettitte or Clemens in the rotation. If Taveras is gone, does that mean Lane gets the CF job every day? Burke? My early feel is that T-Poo got a little too excited about this deal, and his fervor caused the Sox to back away for a second to re-evaluate.

As per Chicago Tribune, the White Sox strongly deny any such deal has been done.

It sounds like Jesus Ortiz jumped the gun.

Both stories cannot be right.

Agreed, Kevin. Either there's a deal in place or there isn't. And the lack of confirmation from the Astros camp is pretty damn telling...

I really like the idea of adding Garland to the rotation, but I'm growing increasingly scared that it would be the death knell of Andy Pettitte's time in H-town.

The Astros deserve a John McClain type at the Chronicle. Jose Ortiz is a disaster. I wish he'd take off and let McTaggart take over 100% of the Astros beat.

More disconcerting may be the fact that T-Buck failed his physical. Room for concern for the Astros? Sheesh.
