T-Poo Locked Up Through 2008

Hear that? That's the sound of an entire city exhaling. The 'Stros announced that wunderkind GM Tim Purpura's contract has been extended through the 2008 season:

Good move, Mr. McLane. T-Poo's shrewd patience with the youth movement was a large part of the reason the hometown team reached the World Series in 2005. That same belief in the youth movement and subsequent refusal to add a bat at the trading deadline may have cost us a playoff berth this year, but I digress. Some critics will say that T-Poo hasn't done anything yet, that the club's success last year was wholly the result of Gerry Hunsicker. And that may be right. The bottom line is that T-Poo's street cred will be established this offseason. He can finally construct the team as he sees fit. Apparently, Uncle Drayton believes that T-Poo's vision is legit. We shall see.

Great! Now let's get Everett and Ausmus signed to extensions! Next stop: baseball oblivion!

As discussed toward the end of the last season, I'm officially disembarking from the "Adam Everett must go" bandwagon. Stop hating on MLB's best defensive shortstop.

Either Everett or Ausmus MUST go. I understand and agree that Everett is a great defensive shortstop but you can't have a team with BOTH of these automatic outs. If you couple that with the pitcher's spot you are giving up an inning of Abs everytime through the lineup. That's ridiculous...

Adam Everett is no more the best defensive SS in MLB than Barbara Streisand is the Chairman of the RNC. It's amazing the absurd lengths that you'll go to defend (a) Adam Everett and (b) David Carr.

Agreed, Bert. Two automatic outs before the pitcher is inexcusable. But I think you have to sacrifice Everett's stick for the benefit of his glove. I'd jettison Ausmus.

Just because I don't agree with your illogical arguments, Scott, doesn't make my position "absurd." This is the United States of America, not Mussolini's wartime Italy.

Playing yet another full season with Adam Everett at SS, despite the fact that his OPS would be embarrassing for an NL starting pitcher, is patently "absurd".
