Futile Attempt at Distraction

I am still in shock at today's trade by the Astros.

Q: What positions are "need" positions in the Astros' organization?
A: Always pitching. Shortstop. Centerfield. Catcher.

Q: What positions are strong?

A: Third base. 1st base. Corner OF.

Q: What do the Astros do?
A: Trade their best shortstop prospect (and one of their best prospects altogether) and a solid starting pitching prospect in return for yet another 1B/3B/corner OF. To top it off, it's Purpura v. Hunsicker, and this round was a bloodbath in favor of the ex-Astros GM.

Talbot, a 2nd round pick in 2002, was 6-4 so far this season with a 3.39 ERA in 17 starts for Double-A Corpus Christi, allowing 94 hits in 90.1 innings, striking out 96 versus only 29 walks and allowing only four home runs in 96 innings of work. He had put up similar, but not as impressive numbers in his previous seasons at Martinsville, Lexington and Salem.

Zobrist, a 6th round pick of the Astros in 2004, was hitting .327/.434/.473 for the Hooks with 25 doubles, six triples, three home runs and nine stolen bases. Those numbers are quite similar to those which he posted in his two previous minor league seasons.

AAA: Round Rock was off again.

AA: Corpus lost 7-1 at Springfield. In what turned out to be his final game with the Hooks, Ben Zobrist homered. Hunter Pence's recent struggles continued, as he was 0-3 with a pair of strikeouts. Starter Josh Miller was knocked around pretty good by the Cardinals, who also stole seven bases in the game.

High-A: Salem was off on Tuesday.

Low-A: Lexington blew a 6-1 lead and lost to Delmarva 7-6 in eleven innings. RF Ryan Reed homered and drove in four runs, and Brian Bogusevic had a nice start, going five innings and allowing only two hits, two walks and a run.

Short Season A: Tri City was off on Tuesday.

Rookie: Greenville was also off on Tuesday.

Strong may be an overstatement, but between Burke, Lane, Lamb, Wilson, Berkman and Scott, I would not consider that a 'need' position. They 'need' better production, yes, but those players are not Everett, Ausmus, etc.
