Astros Minor League Report - Games of August 9

AAA: Sacramento 5, Round Rock 3
- Nothing really stands out from this one. Carlos Hernandez took the loss, throwing five innings and allowing six hits and two runs while walking two and striking out three. Juan Cruz (yes, that Juan Cruz) got the win for the A's AAA affiliatem, striking out eight.

AA: Tulsa 4, Corpus Christi 2
- Charlton Jimerson struck out twice, Josh Anderson had two triples and Tim McClaskey had another solid start in a loss for the Hooks.

High A: Salem 9, Lynchburg 2
- Salem cruised behind Matt Albers on the mound and an abundance of offense. Hunter Pence went 3-5 with a two-run home run, and Jonny Ash went 2-4 with a double and a triple to lead the scoring. Pence told the Roanoke Times, "I'm getting my timing down, getting relaxed. I've got a lot more confidence in the box. It's just a matter of getting at-bats and getting used to things, not trying to do too much." Jeffrey Wigdahl had another solid relief outing, throwing scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. Wigdahl was the Astros' 23rd round pick in the 2004 draft out of St. Mary's, and was promoted from Lexington earlier in 2005, where he had piled up 30 relief appearances and a sub-2.00 ERA, striking out 58 in 39+ innings.

Low A: Lexington 10, Hagerstown 4
- Lexington crushed Hagerstown for the second consecutive night behind Frankie Caraballo's 21st HR. Frankie drove in four runs for the Legends, and C Justin "J. R." Towles, the Astros 20th round pick in 2004, continued his hot hitting (in sparse playing time) with his fifth home run. Towles has had only 101 ABs, but in those ABs has posted .396/.500/.663. Ronnie Martinez won his sixth straigtht decision, allowing three hits and three runs in six innings. According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, tempers flared and benches cleared in the eighth inning when Towles, who was hit by pitches in each of his first three at-bats and homered in his fourth, scored after doubling in the eighth and the Suns' pitcher felt that Towles tried to bump him after scoring.

Short Season A: Tri-City 7, Staten Island 1
- Valley Cats' pitchers held SI to only two hits, with Brian Bogusevic pitching two hitless frames and striking out three to earn the save. Hit machine Patrick Sellers had two more hits for Tri-City, who broke a close game open with four runs in the 9th inning.

Rookie: No report located for Greenville.
